OUR HISTORY
Giovanni Battista ( Guanito ) Barbagelata, a former seaman born in 1901, who, capitalising on the experience acquired as a twelve year boy on a cargo ship and, a decade later, on the Royal Italian Navy destroyer “Vittorio Emanuele”, starts a modest “ship chandler ” activity that extends with time to industrial supplies, then to representation of Italian and Foreign Manufacturers, eventually encompassing qualified specialisations in an increasing variety of side lines :
- Fabrication of lifting tackle
- Construction of lifeboats and fishing vessels
- Supply of conventional and advanced mooring systems IMODCO
- Marine contracting and underwater hull cleaning
- Warehousing and material expediting
- Control and testing of ( liferafts ) Solas equipment and tank
cleaning devices ( Butterwort machines )
- Supply of paints and special coatings, chemicals, industrial and
medical gases
- Design, basic and detailed engineering of packages and “ turn-
key“ plants ( maintenance workshops, chemical and
metallographic laboratories, material handling systems, etc )
Passionate dedication coupled with : the professional expertise generally recognised to its Founder promote the BARBAGELATA Group towards a structural growth to which credibility and technical qualification warrant international recognition and a rating of absolute excellence in the field of hardware of procurement and services for technical needs of large and small Operators, making “ Guanito Barbagelata “and its logo synonymous with service, reliability and wide competence.
In the mid 60’s the Group enjoys the confidence of major Corporations of the time in:
- Oil and Petrochemical (Amoco, BP, Caltex, Continental, Esso, Getty, Gulf, Mobil, Purfina, Rumianca, Sarom, Shell, Sir...)
- Ship-owning (Carbonavi, CostaLine, Lauro, Liberian Operations, National Bulk Carriers, Niarchos, Onassis, Pappadakis...)
- Shipbuilding (Ansaldo, CRDA, CNR, OARN, Hellenic, Shipyards...)
and includes:
- control in several Affiliates located in the main Italian Ports
- Two fully-owned Subsidiaries in Teheran and Bandar Abbas ( providing locally underwater contracting and other services to Customers such as the Imperial Iranian Navy, Sirip, Italian Line, etc ).
